Transportation in Rio de Janeiro

Transportation in Rio de Janeiro

For safety and convenience, we recommend using transportation apps or official taxis to get around Rio de Janeiro.

Transportation apps

The most common options in Brazil are Uber and 99. The payments are made directly on the app using credit or debit cards.

Taxis

Available at taxi stands, hotels, and through apps like Táxi Rio. They accept cash, credit, debit cards, and Pix (Brazil’s instant payment system).

Additionally, you can use public transportation, which includes the metro (subway), buses, and the VLT (Light Rail Vehicle):

Metro | Fare: R$7.90
Payment: Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices or via the MetrôRio app. More information: www.metrorio.com.br

Buses | Fare: R$4.70
While buses cover most areas of the city, the system can be confusing for tourists. For safety and convenience, it is recommended to use alternative transport options.

VLT (Light Rail) | Fare: R$4.70
The VLT is a modern and comfortable train that connects key locations in downtown Rio, including Santos Dumont Airport and the Bus Terminal (Rodoviária).
Payment: The VLT only accepts the Riocard, a rechargeable transport card.
Ticket Purchase: There are no physical ticket offices—only self-service machines at all stations, accepting cash or debit cards.

Integrated Transport Card: Riocard

If you plan to use public transportation frequently, purchasing a Riocard is recommended. This card is accepted on all public transport options (metro, buses, and VLT).
Where to buy: Available at airports, bus terminals, and some metro stations (Botafogo Station).
