Travel Alternatives

The easiest way to reach Brazil from outside the Americas is by plane. Rio de Janeiro has two main airports:

  • Galeão International Airport (GIG) – Situated 18 km (11 miles) north of the city center, this is the main gateway for international travelers. Direct flights to GIG are available from several main hubs such as AMS, CDG, DBX, FRA, LHR, LIS, MAD, JFK, YYZ, etc
  • Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) – Located in the heart of the city, just 2 km (1,2 miles) from downtown Rio, this airport primarily serves domestic flights.
  • Indirect flights via São Paulo (GRU or CGH) are available from many additional main hubs. If you arrive at the International Airport Guarulhos / Cumbica (GRU) or Congonhas Airport (CGH),  you can take a connection flight to Rio de Janeiro.

Both airports offer convenient transportation options, including airport transfers, taxis, car rentals, and easy access to public transport.

As international travelers, you will most likely arrive at Galeão (GIG), where you can easily continue your journey into the vibrant energy of Rio de Janeiro.

Visa Information

Visitors to Brazil may need a visa depending on their nationality. The country offers visa exemptions for certain travelers, allowing stays of 30, 60, or even 90 days, while others must apply for a visa in advance.

To check the specific requirements for your country, please visit this official page. We strongly recommend that you contact your local Brazilian consulate to confirm the necessary documentation for your trip.

For more details, refer to the Consular Services Portal or find the nearest Brazilian consulate in your country.
Make sure to apply for your visa well in advance to allow for processing times and ensure a smooth arrival in Brazil!
You may require a visa invitation letter from FGV EAESP to submit your visa application. Download your personalised letter once you have registered yourself and your guests for the event.

If you have any queries on the visa letter of invitation, please email us at annualevents@cems.org.
Brazil has a visa policy based on the principle of reciprocity. This means that all countries that require Brazilian citizens to obtain visas to enter their territory also require visas to enter Brazil. According to Brazil’s current migration legislation (Law 13.445/2017), visa exemptions can only be granted by the Brazilian authorities on a reciprocal basis, through a bilateral agreement on the matter. Brazil has bilateral visa waiver agreements with about 90 countries.
